This was my first book, and I was tricked into writing it. It is a biography of Wilhelmine Pollard, a strong woman who founded the first literacy agency in the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin teaching English and American Culture to foreign born adults. I was a volunteer tutor and Board Member for 15 years. In her nineties, she asked me to write up a story about the organization so that people would remember the wonderful work volunteers had done. I agreed, figuring to do a couple interviews, write the story, bang a staple into the corner and call it done. But during one interview, Billie leaned back in her chair, her eyes gazing off into the distance as she asked me: “I wonder where in the Appleton Public Library, readers will find my book? Her book! Good grief, how could I pull that off. But pull it off I did, and caught author fever. Cost $9.00
